The Lower Rio Grande Valley is the area covered by the four counties of Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy and Starr. The area is roughly 43,000 sq. miles. There are presently 521 accepted bird species on the list as of May 2010. There are no species (normally marked *) that is awaiting acceptance by the Texas Birds Records Committee (TBRC) at this time, making this list at total of 521.

The list follows the 50th supplement to the 7th AOU list. This list was originated from Brad McKinney's published Checklist of Lower Rio Grande Valley Birds (3rd Edition 2002, published by Valley Nature Center, Weslaco, Texas). It has since been updated with information obtained from John Arvin, Brad McKinney, and Mary Gustafson, as well as by newly accepted records from TBRC.
