Basic Nature Photography Class
at the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco

If you have just received a camera over the holidays and are ready to take the next step and learn how to use it, professional nature photographer Ruth Hoyt has the perfect class for you, her basic nature photography class.

The class takes place in the form of four fun, interactive evening sessions at the Valley Nature Center (VNC) in Weslaco. The class meets January 26th, February 2nd, 9th and 16th and includes a Saturday morning field trip.

The class is geared to people using digital cameras but if you use a film camera, don’t be left out. This class is for you, too, because the techniques we discuss in class apply to both digital and film cameras. Any camera may be used, from a simple point-and-shoot to a sophisticated DSLR.

Class time is spent learning a wide variety of topics, from the camera controls, handling, cleaning and lenses, to composition, lighting, perspective and exposure. The class views and discusses photographs and how the technical aspects used can affect the resulting images. As a result, participants learn about features on their cameras that help control the results of the digital images they make.

Ruth demonstrates software she uses for downloading photos to the computer and processing and preparing them for output. However, this is not the main focus of the class. People wanting to learn more about working with their photos on computers may be interested in her upcoming class, “The Digital Image.”

The basic nature photography class meets at the VNC on Wednesday, January 26th, February 2nd, 9th and 16th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The field trip takes place Saturday morning, February 5th. Details are discussed in class.

The VNC is located at 301 S. Border in Weslaco and you can get directions by visiting the website (valleynaturecenter.org) or calling (956-969-2475).

Cost for the four-week nature photography class is $225. Various discounts are offered. Valley Nature Center members and past class participants are offered a $25 discount. Two people who register together also receive a discount. Ruth accepts payment in the form of cash, personal or business check, money order or cashier check. Sorry, no credit cards.
